Then in half again.

Mateo’s mouth opens. Sofía blinks hard. Carmen closes her eyes, and the relief that passes across her tired face is so naked you have to look away for a second out of sheer shame that she ever needed to fear the answer. You toss the pieces into the stove and watch them curl black in the flame.

“No more north,” you say.

The words feel less like sacrifice than arrival.

Years later, when people in nearby towns ask why you stayed in San Miguel de la Sierra when you could have earned triple in Texas, you sometimes tell them the practical truths. That the store did well. That you bought a second truck and started a small transport route moving produce and materials between villages. That money stretches differently when it is not paying for distance. That Carmen’s health stabilized once she stopped outrunning poverty on ruined knees.

But those are not the real reasons.

The real reasons are harder and simpler.

They live in Mateo bringing you his first school certificate with his ears red from pride. In Sofía shouting at a municipal official twice her age because he tried to shortchange Carmen on a supply order and discovering too late that poor girls raised by old women do not scare easily. In Sunday afternoons when the four of you and one impossible old mother sit under the mesquite sharing oranges and stories, and Elena’s name is spoken out loud without anyone having to leave the room to survive it.

That is the true price of having gone.

Not only the years lost. The years you must now live well enough to honor.

Carmen dies at seventy-six in her own bed with the twins, older then, one on each side and you sitting on a stool near the window because somehow you became the man she expected to stay. Her last clear words to you come just before dawn while rain taps softly on the repaired roof.

“You were late,” she whispers.

You bow your head because there is no point pretending otherwise.

Then she takes your hand with those swollen, faithful fingers and adds, “But you came before I had to die wondering.”

That mercy nearly breaks you worse than any punishment could have.

After the funeral, when the village has emptied and the house feels too still again, Mateo stands before the old photograph on the kitchen wall. The same one he studied as a child. The same young face that once represented more promise than proof. He looks at it a long time. Then he takes it down carefully and brings it to you.

“We should put a newer one there,” he says.
