They Scoffed….

The chandelier glowed overhead. Snow fell outside the glass doors. The brass sign shone warmly above the entrance.

He stood there a long while, hands in his pockets, no longer the man from the grocery store counting out crumpled dollars and pretending not to notice what his children had to put back.

He would always remember that man.

He owed him everything.

Because that man—tired, proud, frightened, half-broken—had still chosen not to sell before looking deeper.

And that choice had changed all their lives.

From upstairs came the sound of Ben laughing in his sleep.

Caleb smiled to himself, reached over, and switched off the last lamp at the front desk.

The Redstone settled into night around him—whole, warm, and theirs.
