She Smiled at the Two-Dollar Inheritance Until the Dusty Trunk Revealed a Secret No One Could Deny

Rachel almost didn’t open the door.

But curiosity won.

Savannah stepped onto the porch holding an envelope. Without the courthouse audience, her polish seemed thinner. She looked tired.

“What do you want?” Rachel asked.

Savannah removed the sunglasses. “To talk.”

Rachel folded her arms. “That’s new.”

Savannah glanced past her into the foyer. “May I come in?”

“No.”

A tiny flicker of annoyance crossed Savannah’s face, but she stayed where she was.

“My father is prepared to make this easier,” she said. “He’ll offer a settlement.”

Rachel barked a laugh. “How generous.”

Savannah extended the envelope. “Fifty thousand dollars in exchange for the trunk materials and your agreement not to pursue further action against the estate.”

Rachel just stared at her.

Fifty thousand dollars.

A year ago that number would have stunned her into silence. It could clear debts, fix the car, move them someplace safe. It was more money than Rachel had ever seen in one place.

And now it looked small.

Not because she had become greedy overnight.

Because she finally understood the scale of what had been taken.

“You all really thought I’d sell my mother for clearance pricing,” Rachel said softly.

Savannah’s cheeks reddened. “It’s not like that.”

“It is exactly like that.”

“My father says these old documents won’t hold up.”
