“The Airport Deception

The departure board flickered above us, flights reshuffling in silence, but none of us moved. Emeka’s jaw tightened, his eyes darting between me and the young woman. She clutched her envelope like a lifeline.

“I’ll ask again,” I said, my voice low and steady. “Why do both of you have fertility clinic records?”

Emeka stepped closer, dropping his voice. “Chioma, please. Not here. Let’s go somewhere private.”

“No.” I shook my head, smiling faintly. “You lost the right to ask me for favors the moment you put your hand on her waist.”

The young woman finally spoke, her voice trembling. “He told me his wife couldn’t have children. That you agreed to let him… find another way.” She swallowed hard. “He said you were okay with it.”

I turned to her slowly. “And you believed him?”

She didn’t answer. Her eyes welled up.

Emeka exhaled sharply. “Fine. You want the truth? Yes, we’ve been trying to have a baby. For two years. You know this. But the doctors said… they said it might not happen with us.” He gestured to the woman beside him. “This is Amara. She agreed to be a surrogate. That’s all.”
