Beggar Boy Cycles 61 Miles to Take an Injured Man to the Hospital — Unaware He Is a Billionaire

He closed his eyes.

Then another memory surfaced: Amma sitting beside him when he was younger, brushing his hair after he had been pushed around by older boys.

“The world will not always be kind to you,” she had said.

“It’s not fair,” he had cried.

“No,” she said. “It’s not. But you must decide what kind of person you will be, even when the world is not fair.”

The memory faded.

Kofi opened his eyes and looked at the man again.

“I’m not leaving you,” he said.

This time, the words were certain.

He lifted the bicycle. He dragged the man back onto it. He tied the fabric again. Then he rode on.

At some point, he began to hallucinate.

The world blurred. The road no longer felt real. Then he heard a voice.

“Kofi.”

He froze.

Again: “Kofi.”

He turned, and for one impossible moment he saw her—Amma—standing by the side of the road in the darkness, soft and calm, just as he remembered.

“You’re tired,” she said gently.

Tears filled his eyes.

“I can’t do it anymore,” he whispered. “I tried so hard.”

“You’ve done more than anyone would ask of you,” she said.

“He’s going to die.”

“You still have your heart,” she replied. “And that is more than enough.”

“I’m scared.”

“I know. But courage is not about being strong, Kofi. It is about moving forward even when you are afraid.”
