“Family matter?” Obina’s eyes moved once toward Amara, water dripping from her clothes, then back to her. “The first day I came here, you told me she was not really family. So don’t use that word now to hide wickedness.”

The compound fell silent.

“If any of you touch her again like this,” he said, “I will go to the police myself.”

For the first time in her life, Amara stood behind someone strong enough to say no on her behalf. Something changed in her that day. She did not know how to name it. She only knew she would never forget it.

After that, what lived between them deepened.

It was still careful, still quiet, still hidden. But now it carried trust.

One day in the market, Obina stopped by a wooden tray of oranges Amara was trying to sell.

“How much for everything?” he asked.

She frowned at once. “No.”

He blinked. “No?”

“I know what you’re doing,” she said quietly. “You want to help me. But I do not want pity.”

He looked at her for a long moment and smiled, not with amusement, but with respect.

“All right then,” he said. “Sell to me like any other customer.”

She chose a few good oranges and told him the proper price. He paid without bargaining.

As she handed them over, he asked softly, “You always fight for your dignity, don’t you?”

Amara looked down. “If I lose that too, then what do I have left?”

That answer stayed with him longer than the taste of the oranges.

Not long after, under a sky turning gold near the river, Obina told her the truth.

“I love you.”

The words hit Amara like both comfort and fear.

“Do you know what you are saying?” she asked, voice trembling.

“Yes.”

“I am not Chioma. I am not the kind of girl men choose in front of everybody.”

“I know exactly who you are,” he said. “And I am choosing you.”
